​We presented Horizon 2020 in Liverpool

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality presented its “Mavişehir-Gediz Delta” Project, which is awarded with an EU grant, first in Spain and then in England. Representatives from England, Spain, Italy, Germany, Colombia, China and Vietnam participated to the meeting held as a part of “Horizon 2020” grant programme.

The actions to be taken by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality for “greener Izmir” came first out of 39 international projects under the scope of EU’s grant programme “HORIZON 2020” and these actions were presented first in Spain and now in England. Details of “Mavişehir – Gediz Delta” project, which is going to be implemented through cooperation of the Metropolitan Municipality’s Izmir Advanced Technology Institute and Ege University were discussed with the two other pioneering cities, namely Valladolid and Liverpool, during the “Horizon 2020 – International Urban GreenUP” meeting organized in Liverpool. Representatives from Mantova (Italy), Ludwinsburg (Germany), Medellin (Colombia), Chengdu (China) and Quy Nhon (Vietnam), which are the “Monitor Cities of Izmir” appointed by the European Commission, attended to the meeting.   

What does the project include?
•         Innovative practices shall be launched to protect the environment in the area from Mavişehir to the Wild Life Park, Çamaltı Saltpan to Menemen Prairie. 
•         Environment friendly solutions will be developed to eliminate the negative effects of urban air temperature in and around Mavişehir Region that is considered to be most vulnerable to the climate change due to compact urban housing in this area and these solutions will minimize sudden flood-flooding risks and ensure easy access to Peynircioğlu Stream by the community.

•         For minimizing the impact of urban heat island, model practices will be launched in a very wide range from permeable surfaces to shadowy walking trails, small parks on the road to woodlands functioning as carbon sinks, green roofs to fruit walls and such other vertical shadowy elements.

Workshop in September
FactoryLab, a unit of Professional Factory, will host a workshop in September 2018 with participation of urban actors. These workshops will include solutions developed on parklet, green recreational unit, pollinator house, green shadowy areas and prototypes of these solutions have been produced.
