The Community of Global Climate İzmir, which targets to carry out the work of İzmir's Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, was introduced to struggle with the global climate crisis. The studies of IZENERGY INC. will be carried out in line with the zero carbon target.
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which makes a difference with its vision of municipal corporation and plans of action against the climate crisis, expedited its studies after being selected to the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission of the European Union among 377 cities. The Global Climate Community (KİT) which was established to carry out the work of İzmir's Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission, has commenced its studies. KİT İzmir, was introduced to the public at the İzmir Architecture Center. The Vice President, Mustafa Özuslu ; the Assistant Secretary General of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, Şükran Nurlu ; the Chairman of the Board of İZENERGY INC., Ercan Türkoğlu ; the President of  İzmir City Council, Nilay Kökkılınç ; the representatives of institutions and organizations participated the publicity of event.
The climate crisis threatens our future
Mustafa Özuslu, who spoke in the program, said“Due to the global climate crisis, the living spaces and future in İzmir are facing serious threats. Özuslu, who emphasized that the current understanding and policies should be changed; said, “While climate change impends a serious threat globally, it carries weight to increase the capacity of cities, to cope with this problem and to evolve sustainable resolutions.”
“KİT İzmir purposes to make city life more livable”
Mustafa Özuslu reminded that İzmir has been the cradle of civilizations throughout history, and a wealthy city where art, science and culture has developed. He said “Being aware of this ancient responsibility, it is our precedence to construct a sustainable, green and livable city for the future. KİT İzmir, which acts with the understanding of smart cities, targets to make city life more livable with innovative and sustainable solutions. In this respect, it will contribute to the sustainable development of İzmir by working on smart transportation systems, energy efficiency and waste management.”
“The 67 percent of the population lives in the city center”
The Assistant Secretary General of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, Şükran Nurlu pointed out that more than half of the world's population lives in cities. Nurlu said, “Turkey's third - largest city is İzmir. It has a population of 4.5 million people. The 67 percent of this population lives in the city center. Even though there is no national legal regulation on climate in our country, as İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, we signed the Convention of Heads on climate at the international level with a pioneering municipal vision.
“The number of buildings with SPP will raise to 16”
Şükran Nurlu stated that they are carrying out a series of studies to supply the energy of municipal buildings from rooftop solar power plants (SPP). She said“This year, the number of buildings with SPP will raise to 16. With this implementation, we not only prevent carbon emissions, but also provide economic savings. Because İzmir is a sunny city. In addition, 4,500 tons of residential waste is generated daily in İzmir. In the integrated solid waste management facilities we established in Ödemiş and Bergama, the wastes are separated and converted into organic fertilizer and electrical energy. The aim is to bring waste into the economy as raw material.”
“Our door is open to everyone”
The Chairman of the Board of İZENERGY INC., Ercan Türkoğlu said,“we will together produce projects that will reduce carbon emissions in every sector and increase us mathematically in carbon accounts. The Voluntary participation of İzmir is significant. The Pilot cities will be determined in the studies to be carried out here. İzmir is always striving to be assertive and pioneering with your experience. We want our experts to contribute to the projects with the ideas and knowledge of climate-sensitive İzmir lovers. Our door is open to everyone. We will do projects that will reduce carbon emissions. Europe provides finance to projects that go through these processes. We will also work to decarbonize our city and country. I'm sure we will succeed. We will maintain our claim to be one of the most successful cities in Europe.”
İzmir has become a pioneer
The Officer of İZENERGY INC. European Union (EU) Projects, Berkay Yılmaz said “İzmir has been entitled to take part in the mission to which 24 cities from Turkey and 377 cities from Europe applied, after the process of the long evaluation at the European Union. In addition to İzmir, İstanbul has been chosen from Turkey for the mission, which will include 112 provinces.”
What will be done?
The Climate City Agreement will be prepared, within the scope of the studies to be carried out. The action plans and investment studies of institutions will be determined. The Mission Label will be received after Climate City Congress. The Acquiring the Mission Label will enable more finance to project in İzmir. The studies will proceed within the scope of the İZENERGY INC.
