Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay hosted a Japanese tourism delegation specializing in coastal clean-up and blue cruise activities at his office on 4 November 2025. The main agenda of the meeting focused on the clean-up of the İzmir Gulf and potential areas for joint cooperation in this field.

The Japanese delegation stated that they are ready to cooperate with İzmir on Gulf clean-up efforts and could support the planned international meeting. The meeting also addressed potential joint projects in coastal clean-up, marine tourism, blue cruises, and gastronomy.

The visit was led by Hirotaka Takashiho, Chairman and CEO of Japan-based Smart Hotel Solutions, who had previously spearheaded a Guinness World Record attempt in İzmir as part of the İnciraltı coastal clean-up. The delegation included public and private sector representatives from Japan, as well as officials from İzmir University of Economics and İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. Representatives of Japan’s Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism, the Japan Tourism Agency, and the Consulate General of Japan in İstanbul participated in the meeting online.
