Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay hosted Sergey Vershinin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Türkiye. Stating that they were ready to provide every possible form of support to strengthen commercial, cultural and economic relations between Russia and İzmir, Tugay said the Municipality would play a facilitating role in increasing trade and investment.
Sergey Vershinin, Ambassador of the Russian Federation to Türkiye, and his accompanying delegation visited Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay. Secretary General Zeki Yıldırım and Head of the Foreign Relations Department Selin Sayın Kapancı also attended the meeting. The discussions focused on strengthening relations between İzmir and Russia, establishing a sister-city partnership between İzmir and a city to be identified in Russia, and organizing reciprocal visits.

Tugay: “I am ready to do whatever I can”
Noting that maritime trade in İzmir had begun to grow again, Mayor Tugay said the city had been an important center of trade throughout history. Describing İzmir as one of Türkiye’s most outward-looking cities, Tugay stated that they were working to further develop its potential in trade, production and culture. Tugay said “We regard İzmir as a city with tremendous richness in trade, production and culture. At present, however, it is only able to realize around 50 percent of its overall potential. I have set myself a clear task: to work toward closing this gap and achieve rapid progress. Russia is a very important and valuable country for us, and I am therefore ready to provide every possible form of support to strengthen relations between Russia and İzmir”. Stating that the Municipality would play a facilitating role in increasing trade and investment between Russia and İzmir, Tugay added that he participated in events abroad to promote the city. He also expressed their intention to organize “İzmir Days” in a city to be selected in Russia.

Vershinin: “I hear Russian being spoken on the streets of İzmir”
Ambassador Sergey Vershinin stated that his meetings in İzmir had been productive and that relations between the two countries were developing positively. Noting that İzmir, as one of Türkiye’s major cities, contributed to the development of bilateral relations, Vershinin said: “I hear Russian being spoken on the streets of İzmir. I know that İzmir is one of the country’s cultural centers with places such as Ephesus and Pergamon. We are also interested in İzmir’s heritage from the Ottoman era”. Emphasizing that relations between İzmir and Russia were not limited to commercial and economic ties, Vershinin said they were also rooted in traditional values. He added that Russian citizens living in İzmir were satisfied with the services provided by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality.

Vershinin visits the “ROMANTİKA / Bir Ömrün Seyrüseferi” exhibition
Ambassador Sergey Vershinin and his accompanying delegation also visited the “ROMANTİKA / Bir Ömrün Seyrüseferi” (“ROMANTICA / The Voyage of a Lifetime”) exhibition at Atlas Pavilion in Kültürpark. The exhibition presents visitors with a comprehensive selection exploring the life and art of Nâzım Hikmet. Produced by Folkart with the support and under the auspices of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, the exhibition was introduced to Vershinin by its curator, architect and Nâzım Hikmet researcher M. Melih Güneş. The delegation was accompanied by Folkart General Manager Metin Sancak, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay, Project Director Ünal Ersözlü, senior municipal officials and representatives of the arts community. Expressing his admiration for the exhibition, Vershinin said: “Nâzım Hikmet is a world-renowned artist, not only in Russia and Türkiye. As we explore this exhibition, we see what an open-hearted person he was and how deeply he was guided by his conscience. Young people around the world should know Nâzım Hikmet. He was a good person who left a profound legacy.” Ambassador Vershinin signed the exhibition’s guest book at the end of his visit.
