The Saint Polycarp Memorial Site, established by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality in Kadifekale, is bringing new momentum to the city’s faith tourism sector. Highlighting İzmir’s multilayered history, the project offers local and international visitors a cultural and spiritual experience while s trengthening the city’s tourism diversity.

Implemented by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality to enhance the city’s faith tourism potential and make its rich historical layers more visible, the Saint Polycarp Memorial Site has officially opened to visitors. Reflecting İzmir’s deep-rooted history, the site stands out as an important destination developed within the scope of the municipality’s destination management efforts carried out by the Tourism Branch Directorate. The project aims to diversify İzmir’s tourism offerings while presenting visitors with a meaningful thematic and cultural route.

Attracting Strong Interest
Designed to become a new attraction for faith tourism, the Saint Polycarp Memorial Site is welcoming foreign tourists through organized travel agency tours while also drawing significant interest from individual visitors. To facilitate access, a dedicated parking area for tour buses has been created. Infrastructure improvements have also been completed, and a logo design was developed to strengthen the identity of the site. Informational panels located throughout the memorial area provide visitors with comprehensive content. The panels include information on İzmir’s 8,500-year history, the Seven Churches of Christianity, Saint Polycarp Church, and the life of Saint Polycarp, while also highlighting the symbolic and cultural significance of the terebinth tree.

Actively Promoted
The Saint Polycarp Memorial Site Project was implemented in cooperation with the Smyrna Ancient City Excavation Directorate, Kültür ve İnanç Turizmi Derneği (the Culture and Faith Tourism Association), the İzmir Chamber of Tourist Guides, and the Association of Turkish Travel Agencies (TÜRSAB). In order to support a sustainable visitor flow, the Saint Polycarp Memorial Site is being actively promoted on both national and international platforms.
