The Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay hosted the Ambassador of United Kingdom to Ankara, Jill Morris, and her accompanying delegation. During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of topics including transportation, tourism, gastronomy, and green transformation. Emphasizing the importance of planning against food, water, and energy crises, Mayor Tugay stated, “We must safeguard our future.”

Mayor Tugay welcomed British Ambassador Jill Morris, Consul Neale Jones, and the accompanying delegation at his office. Secretary General of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, Zeki Yıldırım, and municipal officials also attended the meeting. Discussions covered numerous subjects ranging from public transportation and gastronomy to tourism and green transformation.

Tugay Highlights Municipal Investments
Providing information about the municipality’s ongoing projects, Mayor Tugay said, “Our priorities are transportation, urban transformation, and the cleaning of the Gulf. We place great importance on rail systems and environmentally friendly investments. We are working to further strengthen and expand the fairs that contribute to the international promotion of our city. Preparations are continuing for the 95th İzmir International Fair, which will be held between 5 and 13 September. We are also carrying out significant work in the fields of tourism, gastronomy, cultural heritage, and archaeology.”

Mayor Tugay also noted that he had participated in the first programme of the Bloomberg LSE European City Leadership Initiative held in London. “Being the only mayor invited from Türkiye to a programme specifically designed for mayors made me very happy. Together with 30 mayors selected from different European cities, we discussed our common challenges and exchanged ideas on solutions. I will continue to participate in these training programmes. Planning against food, water, and energy crises is extremely important. We must work on these issues and secure our future,” he said.

Morris: Technological Solutions in Green Transportation Are Rapidly Advancing
Expressing her pleasure at being in İzmir, British Ambassador Jill Morris said, “Thank you for your cooperation and support.” She stated that substantial progress had been made in the negotiations on the free trade agreement between Türkiye and the United Kingdom, adding that their goal was to base the process on a “win-win” approach for both Turkish and British business communities. Morris also expressed hope that the agreement would create significant opportunities in trade in goods, digital technology, and services.

Emphasis on Green Transportation and Tourism
Commenting on public transportation and zero-emission targets, Morris underlined that bicycle lanes make an important contribution to environmentally friendly transportation policies. She noted that many people commute to work and school by bicycle and that the use of rental electric bicycles has also become widespread.
Stating that all cities face similar challenges, Morris said that hydrogen-powered buses had started to be used as prototypes in some cities and that British companies were sharing expertise with firms in Türkiye. Emphasizing that technological solutions in green transportation are rapidly evolving, Morris also noted that İzmir continues to be a popular destination for British tourists.
British Consul Neale Jones added, “You have everything British tourists are looking for in İzmir.”
