İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay has taken on another significant international role after being elected as the Co-President of the United Cities and Local Governments (UCLG) Committee on Culture. İzmir was entrusted with this position in recognition of its achievements in the field of culture.

Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay has been elected Co-President of the UCLG Committee on Culture, part of the world's largest network of local and regional governments. In this role, İzmir joins Buenos Aires, Lisbon and Mexico City in leading the Committee. Recognized for its cultural initiatives, İzmir is the only city from Türkiye represented in the Committee's governing body.
This appointment further strengthens İzmir's international profile in the fields of culture, sustainable development and local government diplomacy.

First official invitation comes from Morocco
Following his election as Co-President, Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay received his first official international invitation in this capacity from Morocco. Representing Mayor Tugay at the meetings, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay attended the events on his behalf.
The opening session of the UCLG Africa Culture Commission meeting was jointly led by Dieudonné Bantsimba, Vice President of the UCLG Committee on Culture and Mayor of Brazzaville, and Prof. Dr. Pınar Okyay. Okyay also took part in an advocacy session on incorporating culture into the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), where she shared İzmir's work and experience in this field.
