Mayor Tugay Attends Commemoration Ceremony for the Srebrenica Genocide

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay and his spouse, Öznur Tugay, attended the commemoration ceremonies marking the 31st anniversary of the Srebrenica Genocide, in which 8,372 Bosniak civilians—including women, men, children, and the elderly—were massacred by Serb forces.

Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay and his spouse, Öznur Tugay, took part in the official commemoration programme held in Srebrenica, eastern Bosnia and Herzegovina, to mark the 31st anniversary of the genocide committed by Serb forces in 1995, during which 8,372 Bosniak civilians were killed. They were accompanied by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Council Members Atilla Baysak, Barış Dalgıç, and Seyhan Müşerref Kuralı.Joining representatives from many countries, Mayor Tugay also visited the former battery factory where approximately 25,000 Bosniaks sought refuge during the war in an effort to save their lives. During the visit, he signed the book of condolences. Following the official ceremony, Mayor Tugay and Öznur Tugay visited the Potočari Memorial Cemetery, where they offered prayers for the victims of the genocide, attended the funeral ceremony, and laid white lilies at the memorial. Ten newly identified victims of the Srebrenica Genocide were laid to rest following the ceremony. As part of his programme in Bosnia and Herzegovina, Mayor Tugay also met with Sarajevo Mayor Samir Advić and Ambassador of Sarajevo to Türkiye, Emin Akseki. He visited the Memorial to the Murdered Children of Besieged Sarajevo as well as the Kovači Martyrs' Cemetery, where the grave of Alija Izetbegović is located.
