Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay hosted the Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Türkiye and his accompanying delegation and told İzmir’s economic, cultural, and historical strengths. The visit highlighted the two countries’ commitment to expanding cooperation across a variety of fields.

Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay welcomed a delegation from the Czech Republic. Ambassador of the Czech Republic to Türkiye Petr Stepanek, Consul General in İstanbul Olga Hajflerová, and Honorary Consul in İzmir Zülküf Emre Çüngüşlügil attended the courtesy visit. During the meeting, both sides expressed their intention to further strengthen relations between the two countries.

“We want to promote İzmir around the world”
Providing information about İzmir during the meeting, Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay said: “We want to promote İzmir more widely around the world. We have strong ports, and İzmir is Türkiye’s second-leading city in agriculture. Our industrial sector is also strong, with nearly 20 industrial zones. We are equally rich in tourism and archaeology. Our city has an 8,500-year history and is home to seven ancient cities. We want to introduce İzmir to the world in all these aspects.”

“Our relations are very strong”
Emphasizing İzmir’s strategic importance, Ambassador Stepanek said they wished to continue developing cooperation through their network of honorary consulates. Stepanek said “Our economic relations as two countries are very strong”. He also added that new partnerships could also be established in various other fields. Consul General Hajflerová and Honorary Consul Çüngüşlügil also expressed their pleasure with the visit.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of gifts. Mayor Tugay presented the delegation with a plate bearing the name İzmir and the book Yıldız Albümlerinde İzmir (İzmir in the Yıldız Albums), which features photographs and information on the city’s historical and cultural heritage. The Czech delegation presented Mayor Tugay with a bowl and the catalog of the exhibition Prag & Bohemya – Tarihten Yansıyan Işık (Prague & Bohemia – Light Reflected from History).
