İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay and his accompanying delegation continued their contacts in Kazakhstan. First, Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay visited the cities of Almaty, Shymkent, and Turkestan in Kazakhstan; he then held various meetings in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, together with Municipal Council Members of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Saadet Çağlın, Hediye Kaya, Mehmet Emin Davran, and Hidayet Petin; Head of Foreign Relations Department of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Selin Sayın Kapancı; and the Vice President of the Federation of Western Anatolian Industrialists and Businessmen Associations, Mehmet Ömer Telcioğlu.
Start of Flights Represents an Important Opportunity
The delegation firstly visited the Embassy of Republic of Türkiye in Astana, and met with Charge d'Affaires Orhan Barış Sönmez and Embassy officials. During the visit to the Embassy of Astana, the current state of Türkiye-Kazakhstan relations and cooperation opportunities in trade, education, agriculture, and culture were discussed. Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay stated that the start of Almaty-İzmir direct flights holds an important opportunity for relations between the two countries, and emphasized that city to city diplomacy and cooperation at the local administration level yield lasting results. Highlighting successful sister city initiatives in the Balkans as an example, Mayor Tugay stated that a similar model could be developed with the cities in Kazakhstan, and that the goal was to further strengthen existing sister city relations, particularly with Shymkent.
Aiming to Increase Institutional Contacts
During the meeting, the production and agricultural potential of İzmir were also highlighted. The export of agricultural products, particularly figs, in which İzmir is strong; and cooperation opportunities in education and trade were discussed. It was stated that Kazakh students studying in Türkiye, especially in İzmir, create an important bridge for future economic and commercial relations between the two countries. In the area of trade, information was provided about Kazakhstan's investment environment, organized industrial zones, incentive system, and investment opportunities. Furthermore, it was expressed that increasing mutual visits and institutional contacts between Türkiye and Kazakhstan is crucial for strengthening bilateral relations. It was noted that the collaborations in education create long lasting results; and young people who study in Türkiye contribute to the development of cultural and human ties between the two countries upon returning their home with the knowledge and experience they gained. In this regard, it was emphasized that the continuation of student mobility, reciprocal visits, and inter-institutional cooperation hold a strategic value for the future of Türkiye-Kazakhstan relations.
Mayor Tugay Met with Kazakh Business People
Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay and his accompanying delegation also met with the representatives of Turkish-Kazakh Businessmen Association (TÜKIB) in Astana. During the meeting, Kazakhstan's investment environment, economic transformation process, and cooperation opportunities aimed at developing commercial relations between Türkiye and Kazakhstan were discussed. Evaluations were made on increasing joint working opportunities, particularly in investment, industry, agriculture, energy, and trade between İzmir and Kazakhstan. Information was exchanged regarding investment incentive mechanisms, investor support systems, and prominent investment areas in different regions of Kazakhstan. The importance of bringing investors from Kazakhstan directly together with the İzmir business world was highlighted at the meeting. In this context, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay invited the representatives of TÜKIB to İzmir, and proposed to meet with business people, industrial, and commercial organizations in İzmir to directly share investment opportunities in Kazakhstan. The parties agreed that the organizations that can be done in this regard, will create an opportunity for concrete cooperation between the business circle of the two countries. During the meeting, it was also highlighted that the start of direct flights provides an important opportunity to develop economic relations, and wishes were expressed to maintain regular contacts and increase reciprocal visits between public institutions, representatives of business world, and investment organizations. The parties agreed to maintain communication to support the existing cooperation potential with concrete projects.
Delegation Visited Atatürk Park
In the continuation of the Astana program, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay and his accompanying delegation visited Atatürk Park in Astana, which symbolizes the friendship between Türkiye and Astana, and examined Atatürk statue and Yunus Emre monument. At the end of the program, the delegation visited National Museum of the Republic of Kazakhstan and examined the exhibitions reflecting the historical and cultural heritage of Kazakhstan; and concluded the program by visiting Grand Mosque of Astana, which completed in 2022 and recognized as the largest mosque in Central Asia.
