Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Dr. Cemil Tugay, hosted Narmina Mustafayeva, Consul General of Azerbaijan in İstanbul, and her accompanying delegation at his office. During the meeting, the celebration of the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship between İzmir and Baku was discussed, and both sides agreed to further strengthen bilateral relations.
Mayor Tugay hosted Narmina Mustafayeva, Consul General of Azerbaijan in İstanbul, along with Consul Zaur Allahverdi-zada and Consul Sevinc Süleymanova. Deputy Secretary General of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Övünç Özgen and municipal officials were also present at the meeting. During the visit, the parties discussed the planned celebrations marking the 40th anniversary of the sister city relationship between İzmir and Baku, as well as opportunities to enhance bilateral cooperation.
Tugay: “We are starting a tradition”
Mayor Dr. Cemil Tugay stated that a Spring Festival celebration will be held at Kültürpark on March 21 and noted that Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, and Uzbekistan will also participate.
“We are starting a tradition. In the coming years, it may become even more vibrant,” he said.
Mayor Tugay also noted that the municipality would facilitate the request of Consul General Narmina Mustafayeva to place a statue of Heydar Aliyev in Baku Park located in Narlıdere. Tugay added, “We can also organize commemorative ceremonies there.”
“I truly want to attend the Independence Day on May 28”
Emphasizing the importance of Baku-İzmir sister city partnership, Mayor Tugay said, “As you know, there is İzmir Park in Baku. I have visited it. To mark the 40th anniversary, we could place a model of İzmir Clock Tower there.”
Mayor Tugay also expressed his wish to visit Azerbaijan with a delegation on 28 May, Azerbaijan’s Independence Day, stating that he would be pleased to attend the celebrations.
