​World Champion in Underwater Rugby

Turkish Women’s National under-21 Team won the gold medal at the CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championship held in Germany.  

Our women’s national team competed in the Underwater Rugby World Championship for the first time in the history of the Republic of Turkey and won championship without conceding a goal. 6 athletes from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Sports Team were on the national team. The Metropolitan Municipality Team’s Coach Didem Özdem trained our team.

Necla Nur Çağan, Buse Gündüz, Fatma Yurday, Bilgesu Tabakoğlu, Gaye Candeğer and Nur Pelinsu Tekin from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Sports’ Underwater Rugby Women’s Team were on our national team and our team beat Norway 6 to 0, Colombia 1 to 0 and draw with Germany 0 to 0 in its group. The women’s team made it to the finals after beating Sweden 9 to 0 in the quarter final and Norway 3 to 0 in the semifinal. The national team was up against Colombia, the team it beat in its group, once again in the finals and won the championship “without conceding a goal” but scoring a goal.

In this championship, Emrecan Arğan from Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Sports Team was on the Turkish Men’s National under-21 Team and the team won the bronze medal after beating Norway 4 to 1 on the third place playoff.

The coach Didem Özdem said they pride themselves in competing in the under-21 CMAS Underwater Rugby World Championship for the first time and coming back to Turkey with the Cup and added “I feel proud for two things. We won the World Cup without conceding a goal in the World Championship we competed for the first time. The men’s team was honored with the bronze medal. Words are not enough to describe what we feel.  I would like to thank to your sports club management for their continued support”.
