We introduced our Smart Transportation System

All News SHARE

Izmir hosted the Smart Transportation Systems Workshop that discusses solutions focused on public transportation, traffic and transportation infrastructure for solving transportation problems of cities. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality and the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey cooperated to organize “Smart Transportation Systems in Izmir (AUS) Workshop” and reviewed the current transportation structure in Izmir as well as presenting the best international practices and evaluating the Smart Transportation System projects planned for Izmir.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Secretary General Dr. Buğra Gökçe delivered the opening speech; he highlighted a number of plans launched targeting the Smart Transportation System and added “We are developing new policies that will promote public transportation. Our preference prioritizes city centers generally tending towards pedestrian and bicycle traffic as a mode of transport. The general framework of this is related to executing our 2020 commitment step by step; ‘reducing carbon emission by 20 percent”.
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality’s Traffic and Control Branch Manager Mehmet Ali Bodur briefed the participants about the Smart Transportation Systems launched in Izmir and current statuses of these systems.

Dr. Khaled El Araby, who teaches System Architecture at Munich University and works as Smart Transportation Architecture and Restoration Specialist for the World Bank, visited Izmir for the first time and highlighted that every city in Turkey must use “one card” for transportation, just like Izmir. Mr. El Araby explained that the European Union had this problem in the past but now it uses one card model and added “As the World Bank, we offer technical support. We worked on fiber optics. Izmir has the largest fiber optic network and this network has a different structure”.

François Begeot, who is the Undersecretary of the Delegation of the European Union to Turkey, explained how pleased he is to be in Izmir and added “Izmir stands out not only with its beauty but also with its status as a city of modernity and city of innovation.”
Begeot highlighted that they are trying to overcome all difficulties related to an environmentalist model in transportation and production in the 21st Century and added “As is the case with everything else, Izmir is stands by us on environmental topics. Izmir is also a pioneer in cycling and organizing this process”.
