All News SHARE

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality is named as the pioneering city for its efforts to extend the use of bicycles through “Haydi Türkiye Bisiklete” (Start Cycling Turkey), a project designed by WRI Turkey Sustainable Cities and supported by the EU. The conclusion report of the 15-month project will be a roadmap for the other Turkish municipalities intending to focus on cycling as a mode of transportation.

Izmir Metropolitan Municipality plans to increase its bicycle trails, start the rent a bike system “BİSİM”, extend the current bicycle trails up to 453 kilometers by 2030 as a part of its Transportation Master Plan as well as enabling access to the inner sections of the city on a bike, improving access of the bicycle stations to the rail system networks and interchange stations, increasing the number of bike but reducing the rental cost and thus the Municipality will set the bar in Turkey with “Haydi Türkiye Bisiklete” project.

WRI (World Resources) Center of Sustainable Cities is an institute operating in the USA, Brazil, China, India, Mexico and Turkey to accomplish the development of sustainable cities and the project phase in Turkey selected Izmir, Eskişehir and Lüleburgaz as the pilot provinces. The project is funded by the Civil Society Support Program II, an initiative financed by the EU, and it aims to support awareness campaigns launched by the municipalities intending to use cycling as a mode of transportation; the project is to be completed in June 2020.

The metropolitan municipalities of these three cities will cooperate with the local non-governmental organizations focusing on cycling activities and organize campaigns for increasing awareness about cycling as a mode of transportation. Each municipality will release a report detailing its experiences, communication campaigns and outcomes after completing the “Haydi Türkiye Bisiklete" project. This report will be a roadmap for the other Turkish municipalities intending to focus on cycling as a mode of transportation.
