İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor, Tunç Soyer participated the United Cities and Local Governments, Middle East and West Asia Regional Organization (UCLG-MEWA) meeting held yesterday in capital of Jordanian, Amman. Tunç Soyer was elected UCLG World Organization Council Member and UCLG-MEWA Local Governance and City Diplomacy Committee Co-Chairman in the elections made for 2019-2022 term executive organs and related committees. After the election Tunç Soyer became one of the 11 local administrators elected UCLG World Organization Board of Directors Members. Thus İzmir earned the right to high level representation in one of the leading local administration unions.
Another decision was made in the meeting in Amman that was celebrated by İzmir. Next Board of Directors Meeting of UCLG-MEWA is decided to be held in İzmir in the first week of December hosted by İzmir Metropolitan Municipality. Operating to improve local governments and local democracy, UCLG World Organization has 9 regional sections, one of which is UCLG-MEWA (general secretariat of which is in İstanbul) and UCLG-MEWA’s Board of Directors Meeting is expected to host over 100 local administrators from 17 different countries.
Contacting high ranking local government representatives in the Amman meeting, Tunç Soyer also met Murat Karagöz, T.R. Ambassador to Jordan.
What is UCLG-MEWA?
It is one of the nine sections of United Cities and Local Governments World Organization founded to establish cooperation between local governments, to protect values and aims of local governments and to share their international experiences. Founded in January 2004, UCLG headquarters is in Barcelona, Spain. UCLG organization is the most extensive local and regional government network representing 240 thousand cities from different areas of the world.
