In the forum, Tunç Soyer was asked how they planned to develop tourism sector in İzmir after the coronavirus pandemic. Expressing that, industries such as tourism and transport suffered due to this crisis, Soyer said ”We have major responsibilities as local administrations to reverse these effects. We founded a Tourism Coordination Board including all stakeholders of tourism. One of the first outputs of these meetings was to improve hygiene standards of these businesses. We are founding a Local Hygiene Committee to define and implement these standards. In line with our Coronavirus Resilience Strategy, we took major precautions to combat the global pandemic.”
On the question of whether online tourisms can replace physical travel, even partially, Mayor Soyer responded, “digitalization was already a trend for global tourism before the global pandemic and we started working to increase digital visibility of İzmir globally to compete with other destinations that lead this trend. We created a digital destination database containing all text and visual contents including the videos of centres of attraction of İzmir. We will prepare Visit İzmir mobile application based on this database. It will be up for download from around the world, learn more about historic and natural areas of İzmir. In addition, we are working to digitalize our commerce fairs.”
