The Applications commenced for the architectural project contest, for Turkey's first sustainability center

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality commenced a national architectural project contest to constituteTurkey's first sustainability center. The deadline for application and project submission is July 17. The center will be located in Bayraklı Turan District. It will play a crucial role in the target of  zero carbon by 2030 against the climate crisis.
The studies continue for the goal of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer to make İzmir the pioneer city of life compatible with nature. İzmir Metropolitan Municipality will play a significant role in the target of zero carbon by 2030 against the climate crisis. The Municipality also started to move to bring the Sustainability Center to the city. An architectural project contest has been initiated for the İzmir Sustainability Center (S-Hub), which will be constructed in Bayraklı Turan District and will be Turkey's first and one of the few centers in the world. The contest has been announced to the public with an advertisement published in the official newspaper. The Applications can be made until July 17,2023. The 8 projects to be chosen among the 1st Phase Projects will be explained on October 26, 2023, after the 2nd Phase Jury Evaluation. The first selected project in the competition will receive 700 thousand TL, the second selected project will receive 600 thousand TL and the third selected project will receive 400 thousand TL. In addition, an honorable mission of 100 thousand TL will be given to the five projects selected in the contest.
The Common Areas for sustainable resolutions
İzmir Sustainability Center will be a zero carbon structure and will be designed with innovative resolutions. Also, it will be materialized within the context of the İzmir Metropolitian Municipality Energy - Climate Action Plan, the Green City Action Plan.The Universities, academicians, non-governmental organizations and citizens will take advantage of  the center where the city's sustainability strategies, policies and projects will be generated. The Center will act an active role in accelerating the transition to a zero-emission environment, presentation and dissemination of urban resolution practices in the field of sustainability.
National Contest
The contest commenced in accordance with the Regulation on Architecture, Landscape Architecture, Engineering, Urban Design Projects, City and Regional Planning and Fine Arts, pursuant to Articles 23 and 53 of the Public Procurement Law No. 4734. This national contest will be a two-stage, independent architectural project competition. Within the context of the project, the goals are determined that observe the sustainability approach throughout its life cycle, are based on data and performance, and can reach the zero carbon target. In addition, it is aimed to encourage creative projects and writers who put forward a circular, cost-effective, innovative environmental and architectural understanding that prioritizes climate resilience and adaptation.
The Conditions of Participation
Those who will participate in the contest must be members of the chambers affiliated to the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects and must not be prohibited from the profession. Again, it is required that those who will participate in the contest must not be among the first degree relatives, partners, assistants and employees of the jury members and rapporteurs, as well as those who have determined and appointed the jury members and rapporteurs. Those who are not temporarily or permanently prohibited from participating in public tenders according to the provisions and regulations of the laws numbered 4734, 4735 and other laws can apply to this contest. Those who receive the list of conditions will hand-delivery their 1st Stage Projects until July 17, 17.00.
Who are among the juries?
The Mayor of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Tunç Soyer ; İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Advisor, Ecologist Dr. Güven Eken ; İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Assistant Secretary General, Environmental Engineer Şükran Nurlu ; the Head of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Studies and Projects Department, Architecture Vahyettin Akyol ; City planner,Prof.Dr. Koray Velibeyoğlu; Mechanical engineer, Associate Professor Nurdan Yıldırım ; City Planner - Green Building Specialist, Murat Doğru were consultant of  jury member. The actual jury members of the contest were Architect Nevzat Sayın (Chairman of the Jury), Assistant Architect Bünyamin Derman, Civil Engineer Prof.Dr.Cemalettin Dönmez, Assistant Architect Aslıhan Demirtaş Cindoruk, Architect Gülsu Ulukavak Harputlugil, Prof. Dr. Architect Mehmet Bengü Uluengin, and Assistant Architect Özgür Güller.
The understanding of participatory management
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality arranged a Research Workshop with a participatory management approach for the project that will bring together all the actors of the city in the aim of sustainability. In line with the decisions taken at the workshop, it was decided to hold an architectural contest for the center and its surroundings, which was planned to be held in Bayraklı's Turan District. Also, the jury members were determined.
İzmir, the national champion of the One Planet City Challenge
İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has implemented its projects with the aim of zero carbon by 2030 against the climate crisis, became the champion of Turkey in the international One Planet City Challenge organized by WWF. (One Planet City Challenge-OPCC) In addition, İzmir was selected for the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission of the European Union in line with the vision of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer to struggle the climate crisis.
