Soyer: Turkey's first sustainability center will play an important role in the zero carbon target |
Continuing to work with the aim of making Izmir the leading city of life in harmony with nature, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer examined 8 projects that entered the second round in the national architectural project competition for Turkey's first sustainability center. At the meeting held with the members of the jury at Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center, the details of 8 projects were conveyed to Mayor Tunç Soyer. Stating that they are very excited to bring the Sustainability Center, which will play an important role in the zero carbon target in 2030 against the climate crisis, to the city, Mayor Soyer said, “We examined the projects prepared for the Izmir Sustainability Center (S-Hub), which will be established in Bayraklı Turan District, Turkey's first and one of the few centers in the world. All projects have their own unique structure. There are projects that have been given a lot of thought both in terms of planning and in terms of the living corridor. The center, which will play an important role in the zero carbon target in 2030 against the climate crisis, is a very exciting project for the future of this city.”.
Results will be announced on October 26.
8 projects selected among the 1st Stage Projects will be announced on October 26, 2023, after the 2nd Stage Jury Evaluation. The first selected project in the competition will receive 700 thousand TL, the second selected project 600 thousand, and the third selected project 400 thousand TL. In addition, the five projects selected in the competition will receive an honorable mention of 100 thousand TL.
Common space for sustainable solutions
The Izmir Sustainability Center, which will be implemented within the scope of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Energy and Climate Action Plan and Green City Action Plan, will be a zero carbon structure and will be designed with innovative solutions. Universities, academics, non-governmental organizations and citizens will benefit from the center where the city's sustainability strategies, policies and projects will be produced. The center will play an active role in accelerating the transition to a zero-emission environment, promoting and disseminating urban solution practices in the field of sustainability.
Who does the jury consist of?
The main jury members of the competition consist of Architect Nevzat Sayın (Chairman of the Jury), Master Architect Bünyamin Derman, Civil Engineer Prof Dr Cemalettin Dönmez, Master Architect Aslıhan Demirtaş Cindoruk, Architect Associate Dr Gülsu Ulukavak Harputlugil, Architect Prof Dr Mehmet Bengü Uluengin and Master Architect Özgür Güller and also, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Advisor to the Mayor Ecologist Dr Güven Eken, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Deputy Secretary General Şükran Nurlu, Head of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Studies and Projects Department, Master Architect Vahyettin Akyol, City Planner Prof Dr Koray Velibeyoğlu, Mechanical Engineer Associate Dr Nurdan Yıldırım, City Planner, Green Building Expert Murat Doğru has participated as consultant jury members.
İzmir, the national champion of the One World Cities Competition
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, which has implemented its projects with the goal of zero carbon in 2030 against the climate crisis, became the champion of Turkey in the international One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) organized by WWF. In addition, in line with the vision of Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer to combat the climate crisis, Izmir was also selected for the Climate Neutral and Smart Cities Mission from the European Union.
