Works carried out in line with the vision of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer to make Izmir a sports city continue to blossom forth. Finally, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Youth and Sports Club judo athlete Sema Mete returned from the European Youth Olympics with a gold medal. At the European Youth Olympics held in Maribor, Slovenia on 23-28 July, the National Team of Ümitler, including Mete, who went to the tatami with the judo mixed team, won the gold medal.
Won a gold and bronze medal
National team beat Germany 4-2 in their first match and reached the quarter-finals. The crescent-star team, who beat Greece 4-0 and made it to the last four, finished the championship at the top by beating France 4-2 and Azerbaijan 4-0. Sema Mete also won a gold and a bronze medal at the Balkan Championship of Ümitler held in Krushevo, Macedonia on 9-11 June.
“I'm striving to come to a better place”
Saying that she has been doing judo for seven years and that she has been successful in a short period of time, 15-year-old young athlete Sema Mete said, “I won the first place in the Junior Turkey Championships in 2019 and 2020, and the third place in the Ümitler Turkey Championship in 2022 and 2023. I was very ambitious to win a gold medal in my first international experience. Now I embraced judo, which I started for a healthy life. 90 percent of my life has been judo. I'm trying to get to better places by doing two workouts every day," she said.
