During the mayorship of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer, who came to office with the goal of weaving the city with iron nets, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality broke new ground in the history of the city by continuing 3 rail system projects at the same time. While Çiğli Tramway and Narlıdere Metro were put into service for Izmir residents, Buca Metro works are continuing at full speed. Metropolitan invested more than 40 billion liras in the rail system in 5 years.

In line with the goal of Izmir Metropolitan Mayor Tunç Soyer to cover the city with iron nets, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has taken revolutionary steps with rail system investments since 2019. With the 14-stop 12-kilometer Çiğli Tram and 7-stop 7.2-kilometer Narlıdere Metro, the metro and tram network increased from 40 kilometers to 60 kilometers in 2019. The 13.5-kilometer Buca Metro, which will serve on a 13.5-kilometer line, is in full swing. Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has invested more than 40 billion liras in the rail system in 5 years.

The biggest investment in Izmir's history
Buca Metro, the largest rail system investment in Izmir's history, is being built with Izmir Metropolitan Municipality's own resources. Four tunnel boring machines (TBM) will work for the Buca Metro, which will serve on a 13.5 kilometer line between Üçyol-Dokuz Eylül University Tınaztepe Campus-Çamlıkule. The Buca Metro, which includes Üçyol, Zafertepe, Bozyaka, General Asım Gündüz, Şirinyer, Buca Municipality, Kasaplar Square, Hasanağa Garden, Dokuz Eylül University, Buca Koop and Çamlıkule stations, will be integrated with the existing metro line running between Fahrettin Altay and Bornova at Üçyol Station and with the İZBAN line at Şirinyer. The train sets on this line will be driverless. Approximately 305 million Euros worth of vehicles will be purchased. Together with the trains that will run on the line, Buca Metro will be completed for 765 million Euros. There will be a parking lot for 240 cars at Dokuz Eylül University station. When the line opens for operation, the number of daily passengers is expected to be 400 thousand. The target for the Buca Metro is to complete the first stage between Üçyol-Şirinyer in June 2026.

Target 170 thousand passengers per day
Fahrettin Altay-Narlıdere Metro, which was put into service by Izmir Metropolitan Municipality on February 24, continues to facilitate the daily life of Izmir residents. Completed with an investment of 287 million Euros, Narlıdere Metro will provide free service until April 15. The line, which is the continuation of the existing line starting from Evka-3 and ending at Fahrettin Altay, includes Balçova, Çağdaş, Dokuz Eylül University Hospital, Güzel Sanatlar, Narlıdere, Şehitlik and Kaymakamlık stations respectively. In this way, a total of 27 kilometers of uninterrupted rail transportation service is provided between Bornova district and Narlıdere district in the south. Passengers boarding at one end can reach the other end in 45 minutes. The road length between the two ends is approximately 47 kilometers. After the completion of the preliminary operation process, the number of daily passengers is expected to average 170 thousand. In addition, in the following period, it is aimed to shift approximately 13,500 trips made by private vehicles throughout the city to public transportation every day and to prevent 7,750 vehicles from entering the traffic.

Çiğli Tram works like clockwork
Çiğli Tramway, which Izmir Metropolitan Municipality put into service on January 27, was brought to Izmir with an investment of 183 million Euros. Kemal Atatürk Boulevard, İAOSB Directorate, Kemal Baysak, Nihat Karakartal, Nazım Hikmet Ran and Ataşehir Junction Station again.  A passenger on the blue line can reach Ataşehir Junction Station by following Nazım Hikmet Ran, Nihat Karakartal, Kemal Baysak, IAOSB Directorate, M.Kemal Atatürk Boulevard, IAOSB Nedim Uysal High School, Katip Çelebi University, Evka 5, Ata Sanayi, Çiğli Regional Hospital, Yeni Mahalle, Eski Havaalanı, Semra Aksu stops. The orange line serves as a ring service between Mavişehir Ataşehir and the green line serves between Alaybey-Ataşehir Junction. A passenger using Çiğli Tramway must get off at Çiğli Regional Hospital stop to go to Çiğli Training and Research Hospital. Passengers who want to transfer to IZBAN's Çiğli Station use Semra Aksu stop. Passengers who want to go to Karşıyaka direction from Ataşehir Junction can continue to Alaybey direction with the vehicles that come to this stop and have a green flag in front of them.

3 rail system investments in the pipeline
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality also has 3 projects currently in the project and tender phase. Work is ongoing for the Karabağlar-Gaziemir metro, Örnekköy tram and Kemalpaşa metro.

Izmir without a U-letter subway
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality has allocated an investment budget of 287 million Euros for the completed Narlıdere metro and 183 million Euros for the Çiğli Tramway, including vehicles. The ongoing Buca Metro is expected to be completed for 765 million Euros including vehicles. Although the local government of the city has invested a total of 1 billion 233 million Euros (more than 42 billion liras at the current exchange rate) in the rail system in the last 5 years, the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure has not hammered a single nail for the Halkapınar-Otogar Metro for 10 years.
