Economic Congress of the Second Century in its first year

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer stated that the preparatory work for the Second Century Economics Congress, which was held on March 15-21, 2023, started exactly one year ago today, and said, “The first stakeholder meeting of the Congress was held on August 10. Our congress, which was held with the intense efforts of three stakeholder groups, four expert groups and the advisory board, left one year behind. The tracking system of congress decisions will also be opened very soon.”.
 
Izmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer said that the preparatory work for the Second Century Economics Congress, which was held at the Ahmed Adnan Saygun Art Center (AASSM) between 15-21 March 2023, started exactly one year ago, on 10th of August, by stating “The first stakeholder meeting of the congress was held on August 10. Our congress, which was held with the intense efforts of three stakeholder groups, four expert groups and the advisory board, left one year behind. The tracking system of congress decisions will be opened very soon.”
İzmir Planning Agency (İZPA), affiliated to İzmir Metropolitan Municipality, will soon publish an online database containing congress decisions. Thanks to the Economics Congress database, the developments about each decision taken at the congress will be followed instantly.
 
During the eight-month preparation period, 22 meetings were held
Groups of workers, farmers and industrialists, traders and craftsmen, which constitute the main stakeholders of the congress, came together to discuss the problems in their sectors and their solutions and contribute to Turkey's second century. Three stakeholder groups held three meetings each and held a total of nine stakeholder meetings. After the stakeholder meetings, each group shared their declaration with the public.
Following the stakeholder meetings, more than 150 experts and academicians attended four expert meetings titled We Agree with Each Other, We Return to Our Nature, We Understand Our Past and We See the Future and contributed to the declarations of the stakeholder groups.
The High Advisory Board, consisting of Turkey's leading scientists, politicians, business world and civil society representatives, held three high advisory board meetings, the first of which was held in Istanbul and the others in Izmir. High Advisory Board members evaluated the ongoing discussions at stakeholder and expert meetings.
Within the scope of the congress preparations, thematic forums and workshops were also organized. In addition to the Youth Forum and the Women's Forum, the outputs of the Child, Street Economy and Education Workshops were included in the congress final declaration.
 
World-famous names were in Izmir
The seven-day congress held between 15-21 March 2023 brought together speakers from many different groups such as academicians, economists, scientists, politicians, historians, writers, artists, union and cooperative presidents.
Each day of the seven-day congress was held on a different topic. 80 speakers made their presentations during the main congress, which was designed as Innovation, Conscience, Walking, Nature, Change, Loyalty and finally Invitation to Multitude and Unity.
The congress was attended by many world-famous speakers such as Prof. Dr. Andrew McAfee, Sir Bob Geldof, Prof. Dr. Francis Fukuyama, mimar Hiroyuki Unemori, Prof. Dr. Ian Goldin, Joschka Fischer, Prof. Dr. Michio Kaku and Prof. Dr. Vandana Shiva.
 
A civil, transparent and fully participatory enterprise
After an intensive preparation period of eight months, the final declaration containing the outputs of all the studies was submitted to the votes of the delegates.
There are 16 principles and 51 resolutions in the workers' declaration, 18 principles and 62 decisions in the farmer's declaration, and 27 principles and 98 decisions in the industrialist, tradesman and craftsman declaration. 
In the final declaration, which consists of an introduction and three declarations, a total of 61 principles and 303 articles were decided. Articles other than 27 were accepted unanimously. The Economics Congress database, where the developments regarding all the decisions taken can be followed, will be put into use by the İzmir Planning Agency (İZPA) in the near future.
