Bertrand Buchwalter,Consul General of France in İstanbul, Turkey, paid a farewell visit to İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer before leaving Turkey. During the visit, also attended by Zeliha Toprak, strengthening İzmir’s relations with French cities and especially Marseilles and Paris were discussed.
Meeting Soyer before leaving for London, Consul General Bertrand Buchwalter said “I had good memories here for the last four years. I will miss İzmir and İstanbul. I believe that the new energy you brought to İzmir will continue to increase.” Mayor Soyer stated that they wanted to initiate town twinning with France and wanted to pave the way for close relations and cooperation with especially Marseilles and Paris.
Explaining the works of İzmir Metropolitan Municipality during the pandemic, Soyer said, “We tried to create opportunity from the crisis during the pandemic. We accelerated laying asphalt during the curfews. We also struggled to organize urban democracy. Despite all the difficulties these works consoled us. Humanity is undergoing difficult ties. Especially in this period, we have to show that democracy is a better government model for Turkey. We adopt a more transparent and inclusive management approach. Our road map is set. We will make the city a world city by reinforcing its infrastructure. We will realize major projects of the city such as Buca metro, Çiğli Tram and Gulf Clean-up.
