İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Tunç Soyer inaugurated the Peynircioğlu Stream Ecological Corridor in Mavişehir, which was completed by pursuing nature-based solutions. Flood control was provided in the stream and a new green area was created around the stream with environmentally friendly practices without using an impermeable layers. With a budget of 12 million TL, the banks of Peynircioğlu Stream have become an area where İzmirians can meet with the green and relax, walk and exercise in the fresh air.
President Tunç Soyer said that they are happy to realize the project within the scope of HORIZON 2020 "Nature Based Solutions", which is the highest funding programme of the European Union.
Stressing that the Peynircioğlu Ecological Corridor Project is not just about planting trees and bushes, Soyer said:
"Our project has been a detailed work in which sustainability is ensured so that nature can continue to exist and express itself in the most powerful way. Such as planted tree species, clearing the river banks of concrete and turning them into areas of green. This first example is the model. Here you will observe that the nature is being safeguarded. We want to generalize this model particularly in all streams that meet in the Gulf, and realize sustainable natural solutions."
Karşıyaka Mayor Cemil Tugay said, "This project is one of the most special ones of this city. It is an exemplary project that directly affects our lives and shows how to combat climate change."
