A ‘’Sister City ’’ relationship refers to the formal amicable terms built between the two foreign cities by means of their local governments. The sister city relationship built upon a decree taken by the Municipal Council is considerably important in terms of international development in the current process of globalization.
With the sister city relationship established, İzmir Metropolitan Municipality has aimed to develop cooperation and provide exchange of knowledge and experience by enabling the communication and coordination between the relevant departments of the two cities in the fields of socio-cultural, economical, educational, health, commercial, tourism, local government services and sports. Consequently, sister city protocols were signed between the city of İzmir and various foreign cities which share similar historical, cultural, social, and geographical aspects, with the purpose of strengthening mutual understanding, friendship and peace between the two cities.
