In case of death of a foreign national visiting our country as a tourist or for official business, the body will be transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institution located in Bayraklı Salhane for issuance of a death certificate.
You may call 188 to contact Funeral Services Department and request transfer of a body.
The doctors of the Forensic Medicine Institution issue the death certificate of the deceased and deliver the certificate to the deceased’s relatives or law enforcement officers. The body might remain at the institution until the burial formalities are completed.
You may call 188 to arrange transfer of the body to the cemetery for burial or to the airport for transportation to homeland.
For arranging burial or transfer services, the Consulate or Honorary Consulate of the deceased’s homeland in Izmir will be consulted and asked to assist for completing the abovementioned formalities.

There are Christian and Jewish Cemeteries in Izmir. If requested, religious ceremony and burial services can be organized in our city depending on the religious beliefs of the deceased. If there is no affiliation with the said cemeteries or if the deceased had no religious preferences, the burial will be in a cemetery with available graves.
The personnel of Izmir Metropolitan Municipality, Directorate of Cemeteries provide contact numbers of agents following up funeral services.
The relative of the deceased or the Honorary Consulate or Consulate of the homeland of the deceased, if s/he does not have a relative, as well as directorate of cemeteries and agents cooperate to do the abovementioned formalities and complete burial and transfer procedures.
188 Hotline is also used by cities in the Aegean Region. The body is brought to the forensic medicine institution in the related city, if any, or to the forensic medicine institution in Izmir before the funeral.
