A ‘’Sister City ’’ relation refers to the formal amicable terms built between the two foreign cities by means of their local governments. The sister city relationship built by the assent of the governor and the relevant ministries upon a decree and decision taken by the City Council, is considerably important in terms of international developments in the process of globalization today. With the sister city relationships established, Izmir Metropolitan Municipality aims to develop cooperation and provide exchange of knowledge and experience by enabling the communication and coordination between the relevant departments of the two cities in the fields of socio-culture, economy, education, health, commerce, tourism, local government services and sports. Consequently, sister city relationships are established between the city of Izmir and other 39 foreign cities, sharing similar historical, cultural, social, and geographical aspects, with the purpose of strengthening mutual understanding, cooperation, friendship and peace between the two cities.
