Federal Republic of Germany Bavaria State Minister Responsible for Europe and Regional Affairs Dr.Beate Merk and accompanying commission visited Izmir Metropolitan Municipality President Aziz Kocaoğlu.

Mayor Aziz Kocaoğlu welcomed the commission which made contacts on the subject of refugees problem and situation of the immigrants offered condolences  to Minister Dr.Beate Merk for the German citizens who passed away in the bombing attack occured in Sultanahmet.

Mayor Kocaoğlu stated that terrorism threatens all the world and a solution should be found “together” as immediate as possible and the guest minister Merk thanked to Mayor Kocaoğlu who shared his sorrow and offered condolences and said: “It is a black day for German which is lived in Sultanahmet. We gladly visit Turkey. We have close relationship and strong bonds. There are Turkish citizens in Bayern. I agree with you: We have to fight together to prevent terrorism.”

Mayor Kocaoğlu gave information about the situation of refugees in Izmir during the visit. He said that until very recently they had the hope that peace will come to Syria and refugees go back to their country; “From now we have very small hope left. Even if there is peace, very limited number of refugees will go back to Syria. In Turkey, there has been an announcement that Syrian refugees will be given work permit. This means Syrian workers’ situation who work informally will be legalized and social rights especially retirement will be benefitted.” He stated that they feel very sorry for the people who died in Aegean and Mediterranean and added that:
“We say that we should do something for the adoptation of the city and the people who settles in Izmir. We are trying to solve their problems by distributing food and clothes in where they reside. These are the things we do for now. When central government will make a project, we state that we are ready to give all the support. Izmir people are tolerant. There is no alienation tradition here. In Izmir, 40% of the population immigrated  from different cities of Anatolia including myself. But we are all people of Izmir. We are proud to say that the people who come and live in Izmir become Izmir’s people in three years time.”

In the visit which Federal Republic of German Izmir Head Consulate Thomas Gerlach take part, Minister Merk gifted Mayor Kocaoğlu a sculpture of “Lion of Bayern” which is one of the symbols of Bayern.
